MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION ON SECONDARY SCHOOLS

  • Dr. Frank R. Alverez, Superintendent, Montclair Board of Education, Montclair, NJ

    Dr. Alverez is currently the Superintendent of Schools in Montclair, New Jersey. He also serves as Adjunct Professor at Montclair State University and is a Governing Board Member of the Minority Student Achievement Network. He earned degrees from Montclair and Columbia University.

    Dr. Alverez serves on the CSS Finance and CSS Policy & Strategic Development Committees.

  • Dr. Thomas J. Bistocchi, Superintendent of Schools, Union County Vocational-Technical Schools , Scotch Plains, NJ

    Dr. Bistocchi has been the Superintendent of Schools at the Union County Vocational-Technical Schools since 1994. In addition, he currently serves as the President of the Union County Educational Services Commission and the Union County Workforce Investment Board.

    Dr. Bistocchi holds a doctorate from Rutgers University, a Masters from Johns Hopkins University, and a Masters and Bachelors from Bloomsburg State College. He serves on the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee

  • Ms. Helen K. Cheliotes, Assistant Superintendent, Long Beach City School District, Lido Beach, NY

    Ms. Cheliotes has been the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for the Long Beach Public Schools since 1997. She has been an adjunct professor at two colleges, a high school principal and assistant principal, dean of students, and a teacher of mathematics.

    Ms. Cheliotes holds Masters and Bachelor of Arts degrees from Queens College (New York) and has a Certificate of Advanced Study from Hofstra University. She serves as the Chair of the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee and is a member of the CSS Executive Committee.

  • Ms. Rosalind Chivis, Executive Director, Office of Secondary Education, School District of Philadelphia, PA

    Ms. Chivis, having served as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, high school principal, Assistant to the Associate Superintendent of Senior High Schools and the Deputy Superintendent, presently serves as the Executive Director of the Office of Secondary Education for the School District of Philadelphia.

    Ms. Chivis holds degrees in both Special Education and Elementary Education from Clarion University of Pennsylvania. She earned her Masters degree in Counseling and Student Personnel Services and her Principal Certifications from The College of New Jersey. Her Superintendent Letter of Eligibility is from Widener University. She serves as Vice Chair of the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee.

  • Mr. Louis R. Christiansen, Director and Head of School, The TASIS School in Dorado, Dorado, PR

    Mr. Christiansen is the co-founder of the TASIS School in Dorado and has served as the Director and Head of School since 2002.

    Mr. Christiansen holds a Masters from Harvard University and a Bachelors from Fordham College. He serves on the Committee on Institution-Wide Accreditation as well as the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee

  • Brother Ralph J. Darmento, F.S.C., Deputy Superintendent of Schools, Archdiocese of Newark, Newark, NJ

    Brother Ralph Darmento is the Deputy Superintendent of Schools at the Archdiocese of Newark. He has been a principal, vice principal, department head, and teacher as well as an adjunct lecturer at the college level.

    Brother Darmento has a Master of Arts from the University of San Francisco, a Master of Arts from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science from Manhattan College. He has engaged in doctoral studies (ABD) at Fordham University. He serves on the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee.

  • Mr. Gordon A. Drummon, Chief Learning Officer, Sessions Online School of Design, New York, NY

    Mr. Drummon has been the Chief Learning Officer at the Sessions Online School of Design, an online art and design school, since 2001. Prior to joining Sessions Mr. Drummon worked at LearningBrands.com and as a Curriculum Developer at Kaplan.

    Mr. Drummon holds a Masters in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He serves on the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee

  • Dr. Donna Durno, (Chair), Executive Director, Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Pittsburgh, PA

    Dr. Durno has been the Executive Director of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit since 1999. Prior to that, she was the Senior Vice President for Heald Colleges, Inc. (California, Oregon, and Hawaii) and served as the Commissioner of Basic Education for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from 1987-1989. Dr. Durno has been a superintendent, director of federal programs, vocational advisor, and teacher.

    Dr. Durno holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, a Masters from Indiana University (PA), and a Bachelor of Science from Seton Hill College. She has been the Chair of the Commission since July 1, 2007 and serves on the CSS Executive Committee and as an ex officio member of the Finance and Policy and Strategic Development Committees.

  • Dr. Maureen Fonseca, Head of School, The Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, NY

    Dr. Fonseca is the head of The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York, a co-educational boarding school serving students in grades 5-12. She is also Founding Head of St. Phillips Academy and a member of several boards and associations including the National Association of Episcopal Schools, New York and New Jersey Associations of Independent Schools and the Head Masters and Headmistresses Associations. She earned her degrees from Vassar and Fordham Universities.

    Dr. Fonseca serves on the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee.

  • Ms. Mary L. Gable, Director of Instructional Programs, Maryland State Department of Education

    Ms. Gable has been the Director of Instructional Programs with the Maryland State Department of Education since 2005. Prior to joining the Commission she was a member of the CSS Strategic Planning Advisory Committee from 2004 to 2007.

    Ms. Gable holds a Masters from Loyola College and a Bachelors from Mount Saint Agnes College. She serves on the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee

  • Dr. Barry Galasso, Executive Director, NJ Assoc. of School Administrators, Trenton, NJ

    Dr. Galasso, Executive Director of New Jersey Association of School Administrators, Trenton, New Jersey, is also the former superintendent Eastern Regional High School and Winslow Township Public Schools. He serves as Adjunct Professor at Rutgers University and Rowan University and is a member of the University of Pennsylvania Study Council and the New Jersey Urban Superintendents Association. Dr. Galasso earned his degrees from Glassboro College and Rutgers University.

    Dr. Galasso serves on the CSS Finance Committee and on the CSS Policy & Strategic Development Committee.

  • Mr. Marshall Hamilton, Public Member, Media, PA

    Mr. Hamilton has been an attorney for the chemical industry, specializing in corporate and commercial law. He has recently retired and is dedicating his time to nature and environmental work.

    Mr. Hamilton holds a Masters degree from University of Pennsylvania, a Juris Doctor degree from University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University. He serves on the CSS Finance and Policy & Strategic Development Committees.

  • Ms. Linda Espenshade Heinemann, Library Director, George School, Newtown, PA

    Ms. Heinemann is the Director of the McFeely Library at the George School as well as a student advisor and member of the Technology and Curriculum Review Committees. She has worked in public and university libraries since 1980.

    Ms. Heinemann holds a Master of Science from Binghamton University, a Master of Library Science from State University of New York and a Bachelor of Arts from Gettysburg College (PA). Ms. Heinemann serves on the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee.

  • Ms. Allison Kokkoros, Deputy Director, Carlos Rosario Career Center and Public Charter School, Washington, DC

    Ms. Kokkoros currently serves as Deputy Director of the Carlos Rosario Career Center and Public Charter School in Washington, DC. Her degrees were earned at Eastern Mennonite College and George Washington University.

    Ms. Kokkoros serves on the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee.

  • Ms. Rachel MArtin, Administrative Director, Mercer County Career Center, Mercer, PA

    Ms. Martin serves on the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee

  • Ms. Mona Nashman-Smith, Superintendent/CEO American-British Academy, Muscat, Oman

    Ms. Nashman-Smith has led the American-British Academy since 1998. In addition to serving as the school’s Director of Counseling, she has held administrative, counseling, and teaching positions in schools in Germany and Canada.

    Ms. Nashman-Smith holds a degree from University of Alberta and is completing studies at Buffalo State University. She serves on the Committee on Institution-Wide Accreditation and both the CSS Finance and Policy and Strategic Development Committees.

  • Mrs. M. Deborah Rutherford, (Past Chair), Associate Head of School, Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, PA

    Ms. Rutherford is currently the Associate Head of School at Mercersburg Academy. She has been at the school since 1977 serving as the director of counseling, department head, dormitory dean, teacher, coach and adviser.

    Ms. Rutherford holds a Master of Arts from Middlebury College (VT) and a Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary’s College (IN). She was the Chair of the Commission from July 1, 2005 until July 1, 2007. Ms. Rutherford serves on the CSS Executive Committee and the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee.

  • Mr. Andrew Savas, Public Member, Houston, TX

    Mr. Savas is a recently retired corporate executive from Exxon Mobil Company. Most recently, he was the CEO of Esso Espaniola in Madrid and the Managing Director of Esso Kenya in Nairobi. He has been a marketing coordinator, an operations manager, and a sales and planning advisor.

    Mr. Savas holds a Masters in Business Administration from New York University and a Bachelors from Pratt Institute. He has also done extensive post-masters work in the field of Economics. He serves on the CSS Finance and Policy and Strategic Development Committees.

  • Mr. Mark D. Schorr, Public Member, Trenton, NJ

    Mr. Schorr is an attorney with the Sterns and Weinroth firm in Trenton, New Jersey. He specializes in commercial litgation, including employer-employee relations.

    He holds a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University. He serves on the CSS Finance and Policy and Strategic Development Committees.

  • Dr. Paul M. Seversky, Deputy Superintendent, Madison-Oneida BOCES, Verona, NY

    Dr. Seversky has been the Deputy Superintendent of the Madison-Oneida Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) since 1986. Prior to that, he was superintendent, high school principal, college instructor, and teacher.

    Dr. Seversky holds a doctorate from Syracuse University, a Master of Science and Bachelors degree from State University College at Cortland, New York. He serves as the Chair of the CSS Policy and Strategic Development Committee and is a member of the Committee on Institution-Wide Accreditation as well as the CSS Executive and Finance Committees.

  • Dr. B. Curtis Turner, Principal, The Seton Keough High School, Baltimore, MD

    Dr. Turner has worked in non-public education since 1992 as a science instructor and administrator, currently serving as the principal for The Seton Keough High School.

    Dr. Turner holds a doctorate and Master degree from University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a Bachelor of Science degree from Howard University. He serves on the CSS Membership and Accreditation Committee.
