Dr. Kenneth D. Kastle promoted to Deputy Executive Director...
Ken has demonstrated his dedication to the accreditation process and his incredible work ethic during the five and one-half years he has served as the Associate Director for Public and Career and Technology Institutions. He has been instrumental in regaining recognition by the United States Department of Education for the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools to serve as a “gatekeeper” for Title IV federally guaranteed student loans for non-degree granting postsecondary institutions; in his new role, Ken will continue to work with career and technology institutions. The quality of technical support he provides to member institutions is well-known throughout the MSA region, and he exhibits a remarkable energy, enthusiasm, and passion that draws volunteers and member schools to our important work. Should you wish to extend personal congratulations to Ken, feel free to contact him at kkastle<at>css-msa.org.

CIWA Adopts 7-Year AFG cycle...
At its meeting in October, 2003, CIWA recommended approval of the proposal to move the Accreditation for Growth (AFG) protocol from five years to up to seven years. This recommendation was approved by both CSS and CES, enabling the K-12 schools using these protocols to choose to a longer cycle for their strategic plan. K-12 schools and districts will receive correspondence regarding how this change will affect their accreditation cycle. For more information, contact Mr. Steve Heft at sheft<at>css-msa.org

Visiting Teams Most Active in March...
While Middle States accreditation teams visit schools from October to May, this year March seems to be the most popular month for hosting a team. The Commission on Secondary Schools will send out 44 different teams during the month of March. Thirty-two teams will validate a school's self study conducted using a strategic planning protocol (AFG or VTV) and another 12 teams will visit schools that used a more traditional protocol. Volunteers from member schools are always welcome to request service on a team. For more information, contact Ms. Suzanne Ogle at sogle<at>css-msa.org.

Petition submitted for U.S. Secretary of Education recognition...
On December 10, the Commission on Secondary Schools submitted to the U.S. Secretary of Education a petition for recognition. Recognition of CSS by the Secretary is important to a number of CSS member schools that offer non-degree granting, postsecondary career and technical programs for adult learners. These schools must be accredited by a recognized accrediting agency to be eligible to offer federally-backed financial aid to adult students. The Commission anticipates a decision regarding its petition in June and wishes to express its thanks and appreciation to the many organizations and people who have provided support, especially those who wrote letters to the Secretary supporting the petition.
